Award-winning incineration toilet could shake up caravan market

Norwegian firm Cinderella, known for its innovative, water-free incineration toilets, has been awarded a coveted Siva prize, beating competition from 50 other Norwegian companies. The company was named the winner of the 2021 Siva award thanks to being a business that excels in areas of sustainable product and production, contributions to reducing climate footprints, production in Norway, partner collaboration and innovation projects.

Cinderella CEO, Gunhild Sjøvik, said: “On behalf of Cinderella Eco Group, our employees and my family, who launched the first Cinderella-prototype in 1997, I would like to thank the jury and everyone who has voted for us. Also many thanks to Protomore Knowledge Park who nominated us.

“We believe in long-term and responsible operations and it means a lot to us to develop innovative products in the heart of Norway's local districts. Our factory in Lyngen, has produced our toilets since the first Norwegian-produced toilet left the premises in March 1999 while our head office is located in Midsund outside Molde which consists of both Cinderella and Sjøvik AS, operated by my two brothers and myself in its 4th generation. We are so proud that our products are made in Norway, and as Ingrid Lorange, CEO of SIVA, put it: storytelling about production in Norway make a difference internationally. It's a seal of quality.”

Cinderella’s incineration toilets have enjoyed success in the caravan and motorhome markets, representing a new way of thinking when it comes to waste management. Cinderella’s incineration toilets incinerate urine and excrement at a high temperature, leaving only a small amount of ash. Four people using the toilet for a week will only produce about one teacup of ash. Cinderella is a total waste solution, in that it gets rid of all toilet waste. And, it doesn’t have to be transported elsewhere, as required by other toilet systems. The Cinderella Travel model can be retro-fitted easily in caravans and motorhomes and some leisure vehicle brands such as Kabe and Sunlight offer it as an option on their vehicles.

Gunhild added: “We first developed Cinderella for the Norwegian, and Nordic, leisure homeowners to improve comfort for all those who struggle with outdoor toilets, odours and unpleasant after handling. With today's distribution network, we are now present on all continents and since the onslaught of Covid in March last year, we have seen a marked growth in the international need for a solution that is hygienic and can be adapted to places where access to water and sewage is challenged.”
