A booking every six seconds in Pitchup's record-breaking camping summer

Online camping and glamping booking platform Pitchup.com has revealed it enjoyed a record-breaking summer in 2022 with several new records achieved for bookings, sales, and overseas visitors on its website.

On the busiest day of the summer – Tuesday 9 August – Pitchup took a booking every six seconds for the more than 5,000 camping and glamping sites listed on its platform. It totalled 7,446 bookings in just 24 hours, which was the equivalent to more than 21,000 people, smashing the previous record set in July 2021 by around 12 per cent. On the same day, a new record was also set for most bookings on a single campsite, which achieved 95 bookings in a 24-hour period. The peak day for campers across the summer period was Saturday 27 August with a staggering 110,228 people holidaying with Pitchup that weekend.

This summer also signals a welcome return to the UK by campers from further afield. Bookings for campsites in the UK from customers abroad have grown by 708% compared to 2021 (equivalent to 34,000 arrivals so far this year).

Dan Yates, Pitchup founder and managing directors, said: “This summer we’ve noticed some interesting developments in booking trends - average lead time between booking and arrival has come down 16% in the past 12 months and now sits at 31 days. Traditionally, Sunday is the busiest day of the week for bookings. We’d already had a really strong weekend heading into that week, with our busiest-ever Saturday buoyed by great weather forecasts, so while Tuesday isn’t typically the biggest day for sales, given the other booking trends we’ve noted this year it wasn’t a huge surprise.”

Established in the UK in 2009, Pitchup has grown to offer sites in 54 countries around the world, to date handling some 3.2 million bookings equating to 25 million bed nights.
