Camping market boom in Italy shows no signs of stopping

The latest figures revealed by Italy’s Associazione Produttori Caravan e Camper (APC) show that 2021 was an impressive year for the industry, with no signs of the upward trend slowing despite challenges facing material supply. Italy recorded 7,342 new registrations of RVs in 2021, an 11.92 per cent increase on the 6,560 recorded in 2020. Italy can also lay claim to being the third largest manufacturer of RVs behind Germany and France, with its companies recording an increase in production rates of 33.88 per cent in 2021 compared to the previous year. An estimated 80 per cent of these are exported outside of Italy.

President of APC, Simone Niccolai, said: “The very positive trend of motorhomes was strongly confirmed in 2021, a sign that the motorhome is increasingly becoming a modern and glamorous tool for enjoying free time. The camper manufacturers have enhanced the production capacity of the factories, present mainly in Tuscany, but also in Abruzzo and Umbria, also carrying out an important number of new hires, as well as the supply chain, thus generating employment in the territories.

“The difficulties in the supply of some materials by the supply chain has considerably slowed down the production capacity of our companies, forcing us, in many cases, to postpone the delivery of campers due to lack of materials, primarily base chassis.

“The other critical issue we are facing is the rise in the prices of raw materials and energy that we are trying to absorb as much as possible. However, we are confident that, in the course of 2022, the situation can normalize, allowing our sector to cope with the sustained demand for campers arriving from Italy and other EU countries.

“Despite the logistical difficulties that our industry is experiencing, we are convinced that the camper industry represents a trend in constant progression because it has to do with the requests and needs of the new company: time free, family, desire for freedom, closeness to nature, culture. And today all this is possible in a camper, with a high level of comfort.”
