Caravan Industry Association of Australia gets behind road safety campaign

The Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) has leant its support to the country’s National Road Safety Month this September to help inform and advise caravan users about safe driving and towing. There are 840,000 registered RVs in Australia so the CIAA will be delivering daily safety messages to its audience about topics including pre-planning, understanding your RV setup including towing and your caravan weights, fatigue management and reminding people to be patient.

Keelan Howard GM of marketing and communications, for CIAA, said: “All road users have a responsibility to road safety when using our roads.  We encourage our camping families these school holidays to be patient and not rush.

“Planning starts before the key is turned, get your car and RV serviced, take a refresher towing course if needed and plan your trip. Plan your trip before you leave, how far you intend to travel each day, plan your rest and fatigue management stops and book your accommodation in advance.”

Recent research from the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) has shown that two in three road deaths in the country occur on regional roads. September is a particularly poignant month as it is the peak family camping holiday period as children enjoy their Spring midterm break. The CIAA says that for similar holiday periods 71 per cent of campers will travel over 250km from their home and stay away an average of 4.8 nights.
