Croatia revealed as top country in Europe for vanlife

A study conducted by online platform Campsited has revealed the best countries in Europe for campers to enjoy vanlife, considering factors such as the number of campervan sites, average weather, number of outdoor activities, price of fuel and more. The country that ranked number one on Campsited’s index was Croatia, with the Netherlands and France following in second and third respectively. Making up the rest of the top ten is Slovenia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Belgium, and Germany.

Croatia, with its 347 campervan sites, more than 650 outdoor activities, and large area of 56,594sqkm achieved the best cumulative score. Its average summer temperatures of mid-to-high 20s (Celsius) also helped to make it appeal more to campervan users – it’s tagline as the land of 1,000 islands certainly helps with this thanks to the very common sea breezes on many of its campsites. The sturvey also revealed that France has the most campervan sites with almost 9,000, while Malta was the country with the highest average annual temperature of 19.61C.

Finan O’Donoghue, founder of Campsited, said: “Travelling in a campervan can open up off-the-beaten-track destinations and help you really get to know new countries.”

He also shared his top three tips for enjoying a campervan break:

“In a campervan or motorhome, you are generally much higher up and can enjoy great views of the surrounding countryside, with a totally different aspect than in a car. So, take full advantage of this and avoid the motorways, taking more scenic routes on smaller roads!

“One of the great benefits of travelling to your final destination in a campervan is being able to take your lunch stops in beautiful out-of-town locations, rather than being tied to restaurants and towns. So, make sure you have your first few meals in the van before you leave, to be able to take full advantage of this.

“Make full use of the campsite facilities for showering, washing up etc., to reduce the work of filling your campervan water tank - no matter what size water tank you have, they empty quickly! You can also use a campervan holiday to help all the family become more conscious of water conservation.”
