German caravan and motorhome industry celebrates landmark year

Hermann Pfaff, president of the Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD) has heralded the year 2021 as a landmark year for the caravan and motorhome industry in Germany. It was the first year on record when more than 100,000 caravans and motorhomes were sold in the German market, an impressive feat given that 2020 had already been a record year and that the latter part of 2021 was plagued by raw material shortages and supply chain issues.

Overall sales revenues for the industry in Germany in 2021 reached a record €13.9billion, which represented a huge 12.1 per cent increase on 2020. It also meant that 2021 was the eighth consecutive year for record sales in the industry.

As you would expect with such an increase in demand, growth in production was also stepped up significantly with more than 130,000 vehicles produced by German manufacturers for the first time ever. About 55,000 of those were exported.

“Caravanning holidays are popular not only in Germany, but also throughout Europe – a fact reflected in the steadily growing demand for German-made caravans and motor caravans. The fact that Germany exported more than 55,000 caravans and motor caravans last year has made our nation the market leader in the European caravanning sector once again,” said Daniel Onggowinarso, managing director of CIVD.

“If the raw-material shortages situation and the supply chain bottlenecks improve this year, we feel we’ll be looking at a highly successful 2022. Given that German caravan and motor caravan makers’ order books are full, these companies will be doing everything within their power to meet the high demand among both dealers and consumers.”
