Robens tooling investment creates sleeping mat innovations

After heavily investing in its research, development and tooling, leading camping brand Robens has introduced two innovative new foam core profiles to its 2021 self-inflating sleeping mat range. The two new core technology profiles – offset and grid – are aimed at enhancing performance, comfort and ease of use while minimising bulk and weight. These advances are part of Robens’ continued focus on sleep comfort that also sees new 2021 construction advances in 3D manufacturing techniques. This allows the bonding together of materials with different characteristics to increase side wall stability.

So, what’s the deal?

In the offset construction, offset horizontal channels cut across the top and bottom surfaces of the internal form ensure an even thickness of insulation across the whole mat to equalise comfort and eliminate cold spots. The other side of this construction is that while it offers better and more even insulation, it actually uses less foam so benefits the weight and pack size. The way in which the foam is cut also means hardly any waste is created as they tesselate. This foam is used on the Robens Iceshield 55 and 75 sleeping mats.

The grid construction has been developed with specially-made tooling that creates a grid system of channels in the foam. This means that air flows into all corners of the mat as soon as the Peak valve is opened, giving it super-fast inflation. It also eliminates cold spots and discomfort associated with vertical coring. This construction can be found on the Robens Sunstone models, which benefit from a new production technique that allows static material to be bonded to elastic material.
